Forming Binary Near-Earth Asteroids From Tidal Disruptions
Title of Dissertation: Forming Binary Near-Earth Asteroids From Tidal Disruptions Kevin J. Walsh, Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Dissertation directed by: Professor Derek C. Richardson Department of Astronomy We present simulations and observations as part of a model of the binary near-Earth asteroid population. The study of binary asteroid formation includes a series of simulations of near-Earth a...
متن کاملholes in galactic nuclei
The concept of an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), with or without wind loss, was used to describe the spectra of the galactic center source SgrA * , low-luminosity AGN and nuclei of elliptical galaxies (including M87). The spectral fits of various authors show that the transition from the geometrically thin disk to the hot flow occurs at quite different distances, apparently not uniq...
متن کاملTau neutrinos from active galactic nuclei
We study the appearance of ντ from active galactic nuclei (AGN) through neutrino spin-flip. We consider two situations: i) Spin (flavour)-precession in a reasonable strength of magnetic field in AGN, BAGN ii) Adiabatically resonant conversions caused by an interplay of BAGN and the violation of equivalence principle. Observational consequences for both situations are discussed.
متن کاملTidal Torques and Galactic Warps
We investigate the tilting and warping of galactic disks in response to tidal torquing. The strength of the torque is determined from cosmological N-body simulations. We find the tidal torques to be dominated by substructure in the galactic halo, such as dwarf satellites, and by a misalignment between the disk angular momentum and the figure axes of the dark matter halo. The radial dependence o...
متن کاملObscured Active Galactic Nuclei
The properties of the absorption in type 2, narrow line AGNs are reviewed by focusing on the X-ray indicators. I discuss the properties of the cold absorbing medium (the putative torus) and of the reprocessed components, as well as their implications for the unified model. The relation between optical classification and X-ray absorption is examined. The case of “fossil” AGNs, whose type 2 class...
